Description
Fox River Canoe Chute
Aurora, IL

*Flow/Depth
Located on the extreme west side of the twin dams/Fox River (west of the casino/island). Make sure to avoid the dams just east of the chute as they are some of the most dangerous low head dams with no access for rescue and dangerous re-circulating currents at their bottoms!

There is a canoe chute here with 4 small drops taking you down to the main level of the river just downstream of the dam. Although not very advanced whitewater is created here, the concrete sides of the chutes could pose some risk if you are not centered properly going into the chute so make sure to wear a helmet.

The cement boat ramp here is just upstream of the east and west Aurora dams. You can either take-out here or take a trip upstream. For advanced paddlers, you can head north and west past the west dam to the extreme west side of the river where you can play in the chutes or continue on downstream through the chutes. Caution is advised; do not go downstream towards the dams as going over either of these dams will likely result in death!

From the IPC 2007 season ending event that started here:

"Participants will experience some beautiful stretches of the Fox with multiple islands and channels, as well as the wildlife that inhabits this rural piece of the Fox. Immediately after the start, paddlers will pass through the site of the South Batavia dam removed just last year. The trip continues through North Aurora, and then Aurora, where the woods are replaced with riverside parks until the very end at downtown Aurora, where paddlers can exit the river and stroll over to the site of the Canoe Chute and the planned Aurora Whitewater Park"

Parking is available in the strip mall just west and adjacent to the river -if during business hours you may want to park in the park parking lot on the south end of the strip mall. Canoe Shack rentals launch from directly across the river just off the trail (public access point) -whereas this put-in is likely owned by the strip mall. Be sure to take out before dam in St. Charles. Various nature preserves and parks along the way. Power boats are usually on the section of the river a little further downstream so be on the lookout.
