Starting point of a new race called the "Fox and The Hounds Kayak Race" where slower kayaks are allowed to start first and lead the race. The faster "Hounds" are released later and have to catch up. This race passes the put-in several times and should be great for spectators.

For more details see the following link .

Here are some photos of the C1 race that takes place just before the "Fox and the Hounds Race."

From RussJ at wi-paddlers.net:

"A pleasant paddle through an area lined with small homes along the river. Can be paddled either direction under normal conditions. Heavy flooding and currents are common in the spring and after heavy rains, causing potentially dangerous conditions.

Parking available off HWY W, just north of HWY 50 (100 yards north of the tavern) There are concrete steps leading down the riverbank to the water. Take out at Silver Lake Park boat launch, on river right just downriver of the bridge. (5.5 miles) There is a Dairy Queen and a tavern with food just east of the bridge in Silver Lake which could be used as a nice break for those continuing up or down the river."

boat, canoe and kayak put-in on a short canal (100 yards) leading to the Fox River, in the northern part of Chain-O-Lakes State park. This quiet put-in is about 2.5 miles upstream of Grass Lake. Two pontoon docks at the put-in ramp. Plenty of parking and seasonal restrooms near the put-in. *Weather

From the city of McHenry:

"Finally passing under the bridge at Pearl Street the walk ends (or begins) at Weber's Park where a new restroom facility will be built in the park, a new pathway and new public piers will also be installed. Large stacked stones will be placed along the riverbank providing a clean look and increased accessibility to the River. Plans for Weber's Park also have one of the more exciting interactive features along the Riverwalk. The Park will be highlighted with a zero depth water feature that uses lights and squirts water from the ground. A new park entryway will have a short brick wall that will distinguish the park and prevent children from running into the street."

Nice launch, parking, port-a-poty, narrow sand beach, boat ramps "sand/gravel at water", and piers. Crowded on weekends and evenings with power boats/PWC's who park along beach (not using launch).

The wakes can be big from some of the larger boats. Nice nature areas upsteam - Fox River Forest Pres.

This is part of Fox Waterway Agency - so you should have a sticker or permit.Visit their website http://www.foxwaterway.state.il.us/ or call most any marina on the Fox.

Directions:
[ From West Dundee ]
From Rt.31 (8th St.) on the North side of I-90, Take Tollgate Rd. East to Airport Rd., Take Airport Rd. South - road will bend and parallel I-90 going East, just before Airport Rd. passes under I-90 watch for park entrance on the North side of road.

Parking is available in the strip mall just west and adjacent to the river -if during business hours you may want to park in the park parking lot on the south end of the strip mall. Canoe Shack rentals launch from directly across the river just off the trail (public access point) -whereas this put-in is likely owned by the strip mall. Be sure to take out before dam in St. Charles. Various nature preserves and parks along the way. Power boats are usually on the section of the river a little further downstream so be on the lookout. *Weather
