Spot I noticed whilst passing by on the I&M. Looked like a decent launch/takeout with parking.

Not too far from here we passed through a gigantic lily pad field and found a couple of snakes on logs.

Current is very slow and the scenery is very nice. Near the Aux Sable put-in the canal is channelized but it does not stay this way for too long.

This is the historic site of Aux Sable Lock #8. Just upstream is the Aqueduct that carries the I&M Canal over the Aux Sable Creek.

Great for a take-out when launching from McKinley Woods (5 mile trip).

Parking is also available on the other side of the canal directly across the canal.

This put-in takes you on the historic Illinois & Michigan canal which opened for service in 1848. By linking the Chicago River with the Illinois River, the canal created an all water route between the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico.

At the end of this trip you will pass over the Aux Sable Aqueduct which carries the I&M canal over Aux Sable Creek, located just before the historic lock #8 and locktenders house.

From the Illinois DNR:

"Canoeists can travel 15 miles of the canal in open water between Channahon State Park and Gebhard Woods. Paddlers can spend the day enjoying the natural beauty and abundant wildlife as they float between these two parks. The Aux Sable access area located between Channahon State park and Gebhard Woods is home to an original locktender's house, Aux Sable aqueduct and canal Lock #8, a perfect place to land the canoe and have a picnic lunch.
